Last night’s opening of the “Damien Hirst the Complete Spot Paintings 1986 -2011″ exhibit at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills had me seeing spots too!! When you first walk in the gallery the two story 21ft spot painting on canvas hits you with the total “wow” factor. Throughout the gallery you see big ones, little ones, rectangular ones, square ones, some with big spots, some with little spots and all in different color schemes.
We chatted with Parker Jones from Gagosian, who was very knowledgeable about Hirst, and he mentioned that in each painting no two dots of the same color are painted next to each other. This proposed a challenge. But sure enough, after staring at about 3 large paintings to find two red dots next to one another we could not seem to find an exact color match! Perhaps THIS was the “Spot challenge” everyone has been talking about?
So,what exactly IS the Complete Spot Challenge? Basically, Hirst has dared collectors to join him in his global conquest. With “The Complete Spot Challenge,” he has offered a prize, Willy Wonka style, to those who visit all 11 galleries worldwide—New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Rome, Athens, Geneva and Hong Kong. Confirm that you’ve visited all venues and he’ll sign a spot print dedicated to you personally. The average cost for this sort of quest… $13,000! Not a bad value considering the major press if you would get if you actually won and the grand prize itself.
ArtSpot would like to add to the “Complete Spot Challenge” spectacle. For those of you who visit all 11 Gagosian locations and spot a Damien Hirst Spot painting with your iPhone and upload it to ArtSpot, we will send you a grand prize of a new iPhone 4S preloaded with our favorite art apps including ArtSpot!
